The Many Different Types of Shutters: What Can I Choose From?

    posted on 11.12.17

So, you’ve decided on shutters for your windows. Congratulations; that’s a great decision! The decisions don’t end there, though, as you still have to decide on what kind of shutters you want in your home.

There are a number of different types of shutters available, so we thought we’d run you through some of them to try and help you make your decision. It’s impossible to make choices without being clear on what you’re choosing from, so Supreme Shutters are helping you with that much-needed clarity.

    Plantation shutters

Plantation shutters are probably the most common, well-known variation of window shutters around. There are, however, some variations to be aware of in the world of plantation shutters, and this variation is mostly concerned with material. Three materials are most commonly used to make plantation shutters: wood, PvC, and vinyl. All three have their various advantages and disadvantages, and your own personal taste and circumstances will dictate which is the best option for you.

Louvred shutters are almost as recognisable as their plantation counterparts. Their difference in style, however, is plain for all to see. There is, again, a lot of variation within the “louvred” category, with the option for much personalisation. Your options are only really restricted by your own personal taste, with everything from the shutters’ colour and shape to their width and material left up to you.

    Cafe style

Last on our list, but by no means least, come the versatile cafe shutters. This variation is completely different to our other two categories, covering only half of the window. Not only does this design allow for maximum light to enter the room, but it also brings a real element of European style into your home. Privacy is maintained, while all of the advantages of having your room filled with natural daylight are also kept.

Hopefully this post has proven useful as a rundown of some of your options when it comes to shutters. If you’re still unsure about the best choice for you, then we’ve got experience installing all the different types of shutters imaginable, and we’ll help you make the decision.

    How to Maintain Your Shutters

    posted on 10.10.17

So, you’ve just had a new set of shutters installed in your home. They look fantastic, and really add something to the room. If you plan to keep them that way, though, it’s worth working out how to maintain your shutters. Here, Supreme Shutters have compiled a list to help you do exactly that.

This is not an extensive list, nor does it cater for every eventuality. If you’re in any doubt over the best maintenance procedures, contact the manufacturers. It does also depend on the material of your shutters, so contact us for further clarification if you need to.

If your new shutters are going to stay looking new, they’ll need to be cleaned every so often. One of the most important aspects of ensuring you maintain your shutters is cleaning. Thankfully, the cleaning demands of shutters aren’t overwhelming. It is important, however, to remove dust and dirt from them from time to time (roughly once a week). Take a duster and carefully clean between the slats, using a small amount of water if required. If your shutters are covered in dirt and dust, then using a small vacuum cleaner might ease the workload a touch.

    Functionality checks

The chances are that your new shutters aren’t going to need testing after the first week you’ve had them, but as your shutters get older they could start to become stiff, and potentially damaged. If you rarely adjust the position of your shutters, or if you fiddle with them constantly, then it’s worth keeping an eye on their wellbeing. Check that the mechanisms aren’t showing any signs of wear and tear, and you should be able to avoid any significant repair jobs.

    The surrounding areas

It’s not just your shutters that are responsible for how they look. The most immaculate of shutters might still look dreary and lifeless if the window, windowsill, and nearby walls aren’t looked after. The key to ensuring your shutters have the right kind of effect all year round is maintaining the overall look of that area of the room. Don’t get too hung up on cleaning your shutters that you let the nearby features of a room waste away.

Here at Supreme Shutters, we supply and install a wide range of shutters to suit our customers’ needs. If you’d like to find out more about the products we have in stock, visit us in store, fill out our contact form, or call us on 020 8391 3955.

Blinds: What Different Styles Are Available?

    posted on 24.04.17

Deciding that you want blinds over curtains is one thing. Unfortunately, though, that’s only the start of it; with such a wide range of different styles available, it can be very difficult to decide which types of blinds to go for. We at Supreme Shutters are here to try and make that process a little easier for you. While we can’t tell you what styles you’ll prefer, we can outline the main categories that are available.

Horizontal blinds are one of the two most popular styles. While there are a large number of other blind designs that are horizontal, we’ve grouped them all here in the same category. They are very easy to alter, allowing you to control light and privacy levels very efficiently.

Again, there are a large number of different subcategories that come under vertical blinds. The other most popular and common choice, they can be withdrawn completely out of the way, or simply adjusted like their horizontal counterparts. Until recently, they were the only real option for covering sliding doors and wider windows.

There is more scope with roller blinds to bring colour and patterns into your room. With traditional horizontal and vertical styles being broken up and in segments, they lend themselves less easily to patterns. If your decor is relatively plain and you’re looking to add something a little brighter or themed, then a patterned, roller variation is a fantastic choice.

Roman blinds are a popular variation of roller blinds. They suit smaller widows very well, allowing you to bring in a bit of pattern and colour without committing too much. Bright colours and bold patterns can be slightly scary sometimes, but bringing in a small, subtle bit of colour allows you to experiment without the danger of going too far.

    Perfect fit

These blinds stay tight to the window frame, meaning that they are perfect for providing you with the exact light control you desire. Their obvious disadvantage is that they are constantly there, and can’t be withdrawn completely. If your room gets a lot of natural light though, perfect fit blinds could be a viable option.

Although we have only briefly discussed five predominant blind categories here, there are many, many more categories and subcategories out there. As a general rule, if you have a particular “look” in mind, ask about it! The chances are that it does, indeed, exist. Here at Supreme Shutters, we supply a great range of different styles and designs of blind.
